ACTS 20 – WEEK 16 UNSTOPPABLE CHURCH

“WHAT DO YOU WANT ON YOUR TOMBSTONE?”

By PASTOR JOHN DECKER, August 20, 2023

Scripture: Acts 20:17-38

Question: What do you want on your tombstone?

Actual epitaph written on a tombstone: “Here lies Pa. Pa liked women, Ma caught Pa, swimming with two women. And here lies Pa.”

Martin Luther translated Psalm 90:12 to say … Lord, teach us to think about death so that we might learn to live.

Acts 13:36 has this to say about King David – … For after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried.

The Big Idea: Live LOUD for Jesus!…and when necessary, use words.

Acts 20:17-38 17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 18 And when they came to him, he said to them:

“You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God,which he obtained with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, 38 being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship.

5 STATEMENTS FROM PAUL’S FAREWELL SPEECH:

  1. I HAVE BEEN FAITHFUL TO DO WHAT JESUS TOLD ME TO DO

Acts 20:24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned to me by the Lord Jesus…

Question: What is Jesus calling you to do?

  • Some people feel responsible to save the world
  • Others don’t think about taking any responsibility.
Paul says it this way:

1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover, what is required of stewards, is that they be found faithful.

  • A steward is responsible to do what The Master tells them.
  • What God requires of us is Faithfulness in what He has assigned us to do.
  • We can stress out over “success” or “failure”.
  • When you enter eternity, I want you to hear Jesus say: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23
  1. I TOLD THE TRUTH

ACTS 20:20 I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes.

  • Paul saw himself as a messenger of truth: He wasn’t responsible for the content of the message; or whether people liked it. He was only responsible to deliver it.

Paul could say: “I am innocent of the blood of all.” Acts 20:6

  • We are dead in our sins, helpless, deserving the judgment of God because of our rebellion.

BUT GOD:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Have you shared the gospel clearly with your family and friends?
  • Paul’s attitude was tears and not anger.

I was with you in tears… Acts 20:19

I did not cease to admonish you night and day with tears. Acts 20:31

What makes us cry?
  1. I DIRECTED PEOPLE’S ATTENTION TO JESUS AND NOT TO MYSELF

I served the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials. Acts 20:19

  • Humility in the Greek was almost an insult, it meant weak.
  • Humility is used approximately 200 times in the Bible.
  • Humilty is considered a virtue.
  • Strength under control.
Tears and trials help keep us weak in ourselves, so we can be strong in HIM!
  1. I FINISHED STRONG

Acts 20:24 … but none of these things move me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus – the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.

3 THINGS THAT KEEP PEOPLE FROM FINISHING STRONG:

  1. Pain
  2. Fatigue
  3. Divided Hearts
  • Paul’s attitude was: “None of these things move me” I just want to finish well and hear from Jesus: “Well done!”
  • I’m not looking for the approval of people. I live for the audience of ONE.
  • My life isn’t all about money. My God has promised to supply my every need in Christ Jesus.
  • I’m not living for pleasure… because in His presence is the fullness of joy and at His right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Paul didn’t just want to start well, he wanted to finish well!
How do we do that?

By taking one step, one day at a time, in obedience to God.

  1. I GAVE MORE THAN I TOOK

Acts 20:33 I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.

Acts 20:35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Jesus always gave more than He took.

Matthew 20:28 “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.

Question: Do you give more than you take?
  • In your marriage?
  • In your career?
  • In your friendships?
  • In your retirement?
Action Questions: What do you want on your tombstone? What do you want your life to say about you?

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. Psalm 90:12 NLT

Or: As Martin Luther paraphrased it: “Lord, teach us about death so that we might learn to live!”
