 | Walking about in freedom – Psalm 119:45
Have you ever felt like a pair of brown shoes? Don't stop reading just yet—you know what I mean. The brown shoes are the ones that are front and center in your closet ready to work, or hastily shoved under your bed. They are unpolished, worn and dependable. They are the ones you wear when you take the trash out, hop into the car for a quick errand, or have to walk any distance. They are never carefully returned to their box nor do they ever get to go to the party... that is reserved for the red shoes. The red shoes are always clean, cared for, and there is thought given to how they will be presented. The red shoes get noticed, people "ooh" and "ahh" over the red shoes. They are a conversation starter and the perfect excuse to get out of manual labor.
It was approximately two years ago, and (woe is me) I felt like a pair of brown shoes. I felt tired and worn out. I know you can relate. So... I called a dear friend and sister, Barb, and asked if she wanted to go shopping. I expressed my brown shoe blues and told her that once in a while I wanted to be the red shoes and go to the party. Amazingly, she TOTALLY understood. We decided at the exact moment to have an official "Red Shoes Day!" The shopping aspect was incidental. What was truly important was the special bonding. encouragement and acceptance that occurs between two sisters in the Lord when we take time to be with each other. We laughed as if we were at the coolest party in town! And I, for one, stood a little straighter and was quicker to smile at life as a result. We made a promise to ourselves that we would make the "Red Shoes Day" a regular celebration of the Lord's goodness—something I experience with more than one friend. It is celebrated with a heart of gratitude for the precious women with whom He has so sweetly blessed me.
The Lord created us for fellowship with Him. After all, we have nothing to offer Him but ourselves. We have been created in His Image, therefore, we too have the desire for fellowship. Often times, the very thing we need is something we neglect. We need each other, dear sisters, and that is why I am writing this to you. I want to encourage (actually, I want to bossily tell you) to reach out to a friend, make time to spend with a sister. Share the Lord, life and laughter, and don't forget to wear something RED!!
